(I)The baby soon learns that, whenever he
cries persistently enough he will receive
attention. (II) In that case, some soothing
syrup taken after consulting a doctor, can be
helpful. (III) Sometimes, when he has no outlet
for his energies because of the lack of
materials, he cries from sheer boredom. (IV)
By this means he consciously brings his will to
bear upon people as well as upon materials.
(V) So, the greater part of the baby's crying is
merely the means of enforcing his will which he
has found successful.
