could barely drag his body away from the

to assess the situation,

all he could do was lie on the wet sand while
the sea continued to wash over him

coughing and choking from the salt
water and the sand, he tried to lift
his head

so he lay there and waited — waited until
some passer-by might find him

but he knew at last he was safe as he floated
in the shallows

yet there was still the danger of being dragged
out into the sea again
