As the chief organiser of a conference hosted by your university it is for you to introduce
the first speaker who is a world famous scholar in his field, and happens also to be a former
professor of yours. So, in your introduction you say:

It gives me great pleasure to ask you to attend the conference and be the first speaker.

I’m delighted you were able to join us, though not as a speaker, but of course we are hoping you
will participate in our discussions.

This is a great moment for me as I am privileged to welcome so many famous speakers.

As your onetime student it is my privilege to welcome you as the most distinguished scholar in
your field and as the keynote speaker of the conference.

What a surprise this is! It’s wonderful to run into you here in this way.
